Chapter #4: Marriage: An Equal Partnership

"In these sacred responsibilities, fathers and mothers are obligated to help one another as equal partners."  -- The Family Proclamation

Equal Partnership is walking hand in hand with a companion suited to or equal to us.  Side by side, in absolute equal partnership between men and women here and in the eternities.

"In our old age my beloved companion said to me quietly one evening, "You have always given me wings to fly, and I have always loved you for it."  -G.B. Hinckley

Chapter 4, Box 4.1.-- Assessing Power in Relationships -

Disagreeing with these assessments indicates an equal partnership. Readers my want to use these scales to assess their own relationships.

Power Processes Scale

  1. My partner tends to discount my opinion.
  2. My partner does not listen to me.
  3. When I want to talk about a problem in our relationship, my partner often refuses to talk with me about it.
  4. My partner tends to dominate our conversations.
  5. When we do not agree on an issue, my partner gives me a cold sholder.
  6. I do not feel free to express my opinion about issues in our relationship.
  7. My partner makes decisions that affect our family without talking to me first.
  8. My partner and I do not talk about problems until we both agree on a solution.
  9. I feel like my partner tries to  control me.

Power Outcomes Scale

  1. When it comes to money, my partner's opinion usually wins out.
  2. When it comes to children, my partner's opinion usually wins out
  3. It often seem my partner can get away with things in our relationship that I can never get away with.
  4. I have no choice  but to do what my partner wants.
  5. My partner has more influence in our relationship than I do
  6. When disagreements arise in our relationship, my partner's opinion usually wins out.

"Better physical and emotional health, better marital relationships, and better parenting and outcomes for children are the fruits of equal partnership in marriage."

“In choosing a companion, it is necessary to study … the one with whom you are contemplating making life’s journey. You see how necessary it is to look for the characteristics of honesty, of loyalty, of chastity, and of reverence.”

“Do you know that since I truly loved, I can better understand why the gallant knights of old always had a lady love to fight for. The very thought of pleasing her would nerve their arms, steel their swords, and make their courage dauntless. Each one would try to develop the best strength and activity that he could possibly reach that he might be the more worthy of the approbation of his lady. Nobility of character, too, the best would prize, that they might merit the companionship of those, who, they thought, possessed the truest and purest of souls.”

Family Proclamation Project 2017

THE FAMILY

A PROCLAMATION TO THE WORLD

WE, THE FIRST PRESIDENCY and the Council of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, solemnly proclaim that marriage between a man and a woman is ordained of God and that the family is central to the Creator’s plan for the eternal destiny of His children.
ALL HUMAN BEINGS—male and female—are created in the image of God. Each is a beloved spirit son or daughter of heavenly parents, and, as such, each has a divine nature and destiny. Gender is an essential characteristic of individual premortal, mortal, and eternal identity and purpose.
IN THE PREMORTAL REALM, spirit sons and daughters knew and worshipped God as their Eternal Father and accepted His plan by which His children could obtain a physical body and gain earthly experience to progress toward perfection and ultimately realize their divine destiny as heirs of eternal life. The divine plan of happiness enables family relationships to be perpetuated beyond the grave. Sacred ordinances and covenants available in holy temples make it possible for individuals to return to the presence of God and for families to be united eternally.
THE FIRST COMMANDMENT that God gave to Adam and Eve pertained to their potential for parenthood as husband and wife. We declare that God’s commandment for His children to multiply and replenish the earth remains in force. We further declare that God has commanded that the sacred powers of procreation are to be employed only between man and woman, lawfully wedded as husband and wife.
WE DECLARE the means by which mortal life is created to be divinely appointed. We affirm the sanctity of life and of its importance in God’s eternal plan.
HUSBAND AND WIFE have a solemn responsibility to love and care for each other and for their children. “Children are an heritage of the Lord” (Psalm 127:3). Parents have a sacred duty to rear their children in love and righteousness, to provide for their physical and spiritual needs, and to teach them to love and serve one another, observe the commandments of God, and be law-abiding citizens wherever they live. Husbands and wives—mothers and fathers—will be held accountable before God for the discharge of these obligations.
THE FAMILY is ordained of God. Marriage between man and woman is essential to His eternal plan. Children are entitled to birth within the bonds of matrimony, and to be reared by a father and a mother who honor marital vows with complete fidelity. Happiness in family life is most likely to be achieved when founded upon the teachings of the Lord Jesus Christ. Successful marriages and families are established and maintained on principles of faith, prayer, repentance, forgiveness, respect, love, compassion, work, and wholesome recreational activities. By divine design, fathers are to preside over their families in love and righteousness and are responsible to provide the necessities of life and protection for their families. Mothers are primarily responsible for the nurture of their children. In these sacred responsibilities, fathers and mothers are obligated to help one another as equal partners. Disability, death, or other circumstances may necessitate individual adaptation. Extended families should lend support when needed.
WE WARN that individuals who violate covenants of chastity, who abuse spouse or offspring, or who fail to fulfill family responsibilities will one day stand accountable before God. Further, we warn that the disintegration of the family will bring upon individuals, communities, and nations the calamities foretold by ancient and modern prophets.
WE CALL UPON responsible citizens and officers of government everywhere to promote those measures designed to maintain and strengthen the family as the fundamental unit of society.

Individual Worth

Here are the links to the talk I mentioned in class on individual worth.

I listened to an 18 minute talk given by a doctor of social work and a researcher of human studies and crunched her talk to these points:

Human Connection is neurobiological.            Spirit of Elijah

Shame is the fear of disconnection                            Satan

Shame is universal, we all have it.

Shame is necessary, it heightens our capacity for empathy.

Shame is vulnerability.

Vulnerability is emotional authenticity--universal.

Vulnerability numbed is obesity, addiction, over medication, in-debtedness.

Authenticity --   is necessary.  Certainty is not.

Blame is a way to discharge pain and discomfort.

Perfection is false.

Vulnerability can be the birthplace of joy, of creativity, of belonging, of love.

                                        Recognizing Atonement

To be vulnerable is to be alive—to believe we are enough.

Enough grants worthiness.                                            God Love Me

Knowledge of worth--Individual Worth battles shame.

Trials or Challenges: YOU CHOOSE

First think of one of your hardest trials.  Stop and get it in your head.

  • Feeling inadequate?
  • liver disease
  • Abuse about your religious beliefs?
  • Friendships
  • Extreme busy-ness stress.

Consider two categories to lump these into:

  1. Natural which are trials or things that happen to us:  like liver disease, being born to bad parents, disabilities, weakness, death, or accidents.  The other type is
  2. Consequential:  things that are results of our choices.  DUI, bad decisions, sin, temptations

The atonement doesn't discriminate between the two. In the BIBLE in Mark the story of the swine possessed by the unclean spirits shows that Christ gives them their request, even those who are unworthy are given what they ask for.

It doesn't matter which we suffer from, God doesn't say, "Well, you brought that one on yourself, tough luck."  Instead the atonement fills in the gaps, heals the sorrows, and strengthens our testimony of Him.  Turn to the Lord in all your fears, weaknesses, sorrows.

  • Can we overcome trials ourselves?  We can make an attempt and when we do, imagine how that might make a loving God feel?  For whom did Christ as our Savior suffer?

WHY DO BAD THINGS HAPPEN TO GOOD PEOPLE:

Weak that heading in the topical guide leads to scriptures all about how the Lord gives us weakness to make us strong.  Perhaps challenges are put to us to strengthen us and strengthen our trust in God.

Now imagine your trial again while you hear about one of the trials from our group:

And looking in the rearview mirror helps.

The level of your trial might be linked to the strength of your character.  We know the Lord gives us nothing beyond what we can manage (WITH HIM).

We watched a video about a guy who says when you are down, get back up.  Find a way:

God Lives--He Loves Me Why?

1 Corinthians 2:9 :
But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.

Our Diagram:

If there is A God
He is probably all powerful,  all knowing,
Is he benevolent?

Is he our creator?

Does he love me like a loving creator would?

If he loves me so much wouldn't he wish for me to accomplish the greatest things?

Would he help me do so?

Our discussion was not as good as it could have been this week, primarily because I had not done my studying as much as was needed, but, most of all, I think it was that I didn't makeas many assignments to you guys.  I loved the remarks given and insights, and I will work harder to ask for more comments during the lesson.

Please text, message, call Sis. Carlson with  ideas, questions, or thoughts that you have for next week's class:

What is God Like and Why Do I Care?

Next Week our class decided on the following God Head related topic:

The Nature of God -- What is He Like and What Does That Mean To Me?
Hey, go back, click that and watch the video.
It's true that "anyplace [you are] is a holy place."

Courtney volunteered to copy and discuss a  great quote she has about this topic.  Looking forward to that!

Questions to be pondering:

  • If there is a God, Did He create me?
  • If He created me, Why?
  • Is He all knowing?  What does He know about me?
  • Am I in His plan?

Add more in the comments/questions below and we'll cover them.

You could also Volunteer to lead a topic of discussion or scripture--just note it in the comments below.

The GodHead, One or Three--and Why Bother?

Wow, had a great class this week. The Young Women met all together, and brainstormed great ideas.

Is There A God?  What part does He have in the GodHead?   Click there for resources to learn.

Why do we bother to get a testimony of God?

The group said Believing in a God helps the following:
  • It's Reassuring to know we're not doing this all alone.
  • Atoning Help in everything - through Christ.  Phip 4:13 !!!  Yeah, click it!
  • Good to know life has a Plan and Purpose.
  • Prayers - to know somebody listens and answers.
  • After life, there is peace in knowing families are forever.
  • Hope amidst failure--for repentance and forgiveness.
  • Through Him temples work--for inspiration too.
  • and more I can't remember.  WE NEED A SCRIBE people!!!
They explained why we believe the Godhead is separate and they discussed where in the Bible it says so,
  • Liz W. talked about JS Vision in Joseph Smith History  and in the Bible:
  • Courtney M. Acts 7:55-56 during the stoning of Stephen when he sees God and Jesus separate
  • In Luke 22:42 when Jesus is praying -- to God we assume in Gethsemane that his plea - "Father, Let this cup pass from me" is not to himself.
  • In Luke 23:34 When Jesus is on the cross and prays "Father, Forgive them..."  to whom, himself?
They talked about how the combination of the trinity began. (Wiki'd Council of Nicea)

In 300 AD there was lots of religious infighting, Emperor Constantine called the leaders together in Nicea and made them decide on the nature of God.  The men decided it would be easier if there was only one God all grouped together, and so it was.  Subsequent translations of the bible coincide with that decision.

We ended with questions about what we learned or the nature of the Godhead for next week:

  • If God has a purpose, how does the Godhead work together to accomplish it?  John 17:21; 1 John 5:7; Alma 11:44; D&C 20:28
  • What does it mean when we're told God, Jesus and Holy Ghost are One?
  • Will the Holy Ghost ever get a body and gain salvation?
  • and more... which I can't remember people!  Anyone recall?
Thanks for all your challenging thoughts.  Leaders can only facilitate when we know Your Plan.

My best for a great week,  Sister Darcey
